What you would like to take away from a session on Embedded Professional Development?
We all know that for student learning to be effective, it must be personalized and meaningful to the individual. This is equally important when the educators are the learners; when teachers are students. Historically, most professional development practices don’t follow this basic principle.
Over the past two years, our team has had the opportunity to work with teachers and administrators at a variety of schools in South Calgary. We generally offer support, education and teacher training around multiple Distributed Learning technologies, theories and techniques.
We have developed, implemented and modified a variety of PD models that support teacher learning in a meaningful and sustainable way. We will present some of the models that have proven effective because of the personalization of the material and methods.
Through our session, we will demonstrate a model of personalization which relies on the participation of our audience. In order to ensure this session meets anticipated needs, we would like to gather information from our participants in advance.
Please indicate your specific professional role and suggest what you would like to take away from a session on Embedded Professional Development?

Use of Technology in Embedded Professional Development
An alternative session on ePD strategies.
Thanks for your question! We will touch only briefly on the ePD strategies used within CBE. However, there is a session immediately following ours that you might find addresses this question directly. It is titled Personalizing Professional Learning. It is led by Karen Pegler and Terri-Lynn Brown in room Stephen A from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.. Here is a link to more information: http://symposium.adeta.org/node/69
Embedded Teacher Training
Embedded PD
e-PD vs Embedded PD
Westwind's Embedded PD
I think a bit of background on our current embedded PD programs may help out with your question Monti. Right now my position is a full time AISI (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) coordinator for our division. The main part in my role this year has been to run a division wide embedded PD initiative centered on base level tech skills. This has focussed on smartboard use and non-traditional ways of representing student learning. We run a separate needs analysis for each school, and do a fair amount of customization. Delivery usually centers around a week long blitz with small group sessions, 1-on-1 time, and video conference based sharing sessions to schools who have already had training. All sessions are supported via a learning management system that houses screencasts of training, examples of classroom use, discussion forums, extra resources, etc. Trainers are rotated with 1/2 of them coming from schools who last received training.
With that background in mind, I guess what I would like to take away from a session on embedded PD are :1) different perspectives on lead in / lead out mediums to support training, 2) issues in creating division level professional learning communities separated by significant space, 3) the changing role of formal workshops as a result of embedded PD.
Looking forward to your session.
